Motivated by the lack of outlets for students to explore their passions in biological research, including pre-medicinal studies, students from Montgomery High School created their own iGEM team in the 2013-2014 academic year. While the beginning of the season was quite turbulent, Montgomery iGEM has stabilized into a club with over 30 actively participating members who are all motivated by the advent of innovation.

In the Montgomery School district, there is very prominent emphasis on the importance of STEM education, but this emphasis generally manifests itself in the form of engineering clubs and extracurriculars. Montgomery is known for its Robotics and Science Olympiad teams, but neither of which provide students with scientific laboratory experience. In addition to our interest in biology and the strikingly innovative field of synthetic biology, this lack of outlet became the impetus for creating this team. We strive to allow students to further their interests in the field of scientific research. This program at our school facilitates the process of creating the next generation of doctors, biomedical engineers and innovators in science. With the introduction of iGEM into Montgomery's extracurricular community, the possibility of achieving these goals is greatly increased.
