The work of the Basic Research Committee formed the backbone of the research of the project. We researched potential VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, that would be present in the exhaled breaths of people with lung cancer.  We also researched genes that would be indicators of the presence of these VOCs.  As of now, we are using the VOCs ethanol, formaldehyde, and xylene.  The associated genes are aldB, frmR, and XylR, respectively.

The Fundamental Research Committee was responsible for designing the proposed construct at the theoretical level. Working with the Applied Research Committee, the Fundamental Research Committee helped implement the actual biological system. The Team conducted extensive literature reviews, contacted professionals working in the field, and presented findings to the team on a regular basis.
